Overview/About

About

We explain how vehicle values are set. That is the whole business.

No appraisals, no valuations, no lead forms, no affiliate links to a pricing product. Just the mechanics, written so that someone can go and read a real market report afterwards and understand it.

Why it exists

Most valuation content answers the wrong question

Search for what a vehicle is worth and you will find a hundred tools that return a number and almost nothing that explains where the number came from. That is a problem, because the number is a modelled estimate with a confidence range, produced from a sample, adjusted by a method, and it is frequently wrong for a specific vehicle in a specific place.

People who understand the mechanism ask better questions of the tools: is this adjusted for mix, does the sample cover my region, is this a wholesale number being used for a retail decision, and how old is it. Those questions are worth more than another estimate.

So this site teaches the mechanism. Four long pieces, each covering one of the forces that set used vehicle values, plus a deliberately blunt estimator that demonstrates how the levers interact without pretending to price anything.

Editorial standards

How we handle numbers

These are the rules we hold ourselves to, and the reason parts of this site are less satisfying to read than a confident blog post.

01

No invented statistics

We do not publish research findings, survey results or percentages we cannot stand behind. Where the honest answer is "it depends on your segment and your region", that is what we write.

02

Constructed charts are labelled

Every chart on this site is an illustrative example built to show a shape, and every one of them says so directly underneath. None of them is transaction data.

03

The estimator is a teaching aid

It rounds hard on purpose, states its illustrative status next to its output, and has no access to market data. It shows direction and magnitude. It is not an appraisal.

04

No testimonials

We do not have customers to quote, so there are no customer quotes, no invented names, no stock-photo faces and no badges.

05

No commercial relationships

No affiliate arrangements with valuation providers, marketplaces, dealers, auctions or lenders. Nothing here is placed.

06

Corrections welcome

If something here is wrong or has gone stale, tell us and we will fix it. That is a genuine offer, not a formality.
